A touch of glass

One of the world’s foremost glass maestros, Lino Tagliapietra, recently shared the secrets of his craft with students at the ANU School of Art.

You could say Lino Tagliapietra has glass flowing through his veins. One of his earliest memories is of watching a glass blower at work at the Venini studios – one of the largest and most successful glass workshops on Murano, an island near Venice which has a history of glassmaking dating back to 984AD.

At just 12 years old, he would have the chance to blow his own glass, taking up an apprenticeship with Archimede Seguso, one of the greatest glass designers of all time. It’s little surprise that by the time he was 21 he had achieved the coveted rank of ‘glass maestro’. his pieces now sell for tens of thousands of dollars.
